The Midnighter was "born" when he and his future husband Apollo first uttered their codenames. They were granted superhuman abilities by Henry Bendix via implants at the expense of their past. After a disastrous first mission where the other members of their team were killed, they went underground to protect themselves from the insane Bendix, and fought corruption and injustice from a street level. Somewhere along the lines they fell in love.

They were able to come into the limelight in 1999 after joining Jenny Sparks' new supergroup--The Authority. There Midnighter settled down and married Apollo, with whom he adopted daughter Jenny Quantum. On the superhero front he's fought God, a puppet Authority, a charismatic cult leader, the United States of America, his daughter's evil twin, and his maker. He's even run off solo to fight Hitler and attempted to discover his identity prior to putting on the old leather costume.

The Midnighter may not be any closer to knowing the truth about his past, but he's pretty content with the way things are now.
